Just when we thought we knew who Nowitzki was he turns around and gives all Mavs fans a surprise to remember by giving the organization the ultimate hometown discount. It was believed Dirk wold sign a 3-year $30 million deal with a player option in year three, but instead turns around and takes an additional $5 million less with no player option.
It seems like the move was needed for all the existing moves the Mavs have currently made and not for any potential new ones. Nonetheless, Nowitzki has shown sports fans everywhere why is the ultimate teammate.
For a player of Dirk’s caliber to not care about egoism and fame like other superstars in the league is unheard of in this day and age. Dirk left almost $40 million on the table by not taking the Rocket’s or Lakers’s max contract offer. Most of us fans always talk about players taking pay cut, but how many of us would leave that amount of money on the table. Personally I don’t know if I could turn down an offer like that but that’s what makes Dirk, Dirk.
Make no doubt about it, Nowitzki is still an All-Star in the NBA, but will be paid as if he was just an above average player. To put it into perspective Kobe Bryant, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Bosh, and Carmelo Anthony will make almost as much or equal to what Dirk will make over the next THREE YEARS.
Pause for a second and just think about it. It’s like a co-worker of ours taking a two-year vacation while you work for three years straight doing the same type of work for the same amount of pay.
Lets also not forget the pay cut Dirk took back in the summer of 2010 to give the Mavs financial flexibility before winning the 2011 NBA Finals.
For any player out there that doesn’t want to come to Dallas and play alongside Nowitzki, just stay away. We don’t need you nor do we want you. The Mavericks have developed a family culture here in Dallas and not everyone is a fit for this great organization.
Of course there are situations where the difference in money is just too drastic for any one individual, but for the most part there have been free-agents that could have made the maximum here in Dallas and choose to go elsewhere. Not to mention any names, Deron Williams and Dwight Howard! This organization is just fine without you and we’ll win another ring without you.
We all know the day Nowitzki puts on his Mavs uniform for the last time there won’t be a single Mavs fan that won’t be shedding a tear. But for now lets continue to appreciate and thank Dirk for the sacrifices he has made.
Thank you Dirk for the joy you bring us fans season after season. If more people were like you the world would be a better place. MFFL’s around the world salute you.
