As this years free agency frenzy draws to a close and teams are filling their last few roster spots, it is time to see how the Mavericks stack up against the rest of the NBA.
Offensively the Mavericks are easily a top 3 team in the NBA. With players like Dirk, Monta Ellis, and Chandler Parsons on the roster it’s hard not to be at the top of the totem pole. Joining the Mavericks at the top would be the Clippers and the Thunder. You might be asking why Golden State isn’t up there, they are not in the top 3 because of the fact that they are only good at one thing and that’s shoot the 3 ball. Dallas, SA, LAC, and Oklahoma City on the other hand have a balanced roster and score and many ways. Being this website is for MFFL’s I’m sure no one is too upset that Cleveland isn’t up there either but I will explain why anyway. It is well-known that Kyrie Irving and LeBron James are two of the best offensive players in the game. This being said they have only played together during the All-Star games, it is not guaranteed that they will compliment each others play. Of course if Kevin Love were to sign with the Cavs it would be harder to deny them a spot in the top 3 but for now they don’t make the cut.
Defensively the Mavericks have struggled for the past few seasons, but hopefully this will change with the acquiring of Tyson Chandler and Al-Farouq Aminu. Of course these additions will help the team defensively but it won’t bring Dallas to the top of the pyramid, I believe that the Mavericks will be a guaranteed top 15 team on the defensive side of the ball for next season. It is possible that Tyson Chandler returns to DPOY form and Dallas becomes a top 10 team, but that is a big if. With the shape that everyone is in at the moment, Tyson and Jameer Nelson are both upgrades defensively while Chandler Parsons is a step down from Shawn Marion. Al-Farouq Aminu will be able to pick up the slack left behind by Parsons just as Devin Harris will behind Monta Ellis. The Mavericks are in much better shape than last season but compared to the NBA as a whole they are still not elite.
Overall the Mavericks stack up very well compared to the rest of the NBA. While defense will still be an issue, the amount of offensive power will make up for it. After looking over all the rosters I put the Mavericks as a top 5 team in the Western Conference which coincidentally puts them as a top 5 team in the NBA. Funny how that works. I also see Monta Ellis being a top 3 shooting guard and an all-star, Chandler Parsons being a top 10 small forward, and Dirk being a top 5 Power Forward and all-star. I know it seems like I am being a little too optimistic here but I see no reason why these predictions don’t end up a reality.
This season is going to be special.
