For the Mavericks last home game in preseason, the Starters were back and that’s all it took.
A jumper from Tyson Chandler to begin the game got the Mavs on the board first. He was followed quickly by a Chandler Parson’s 3 and the Mavs were off to the races as they beat their southwest division rival Memphis Grizzlies 108-103 to close out the preseason at home and even their record at 3-3.
All five starters for the Mavs – Dirk, Chandler, Parsons, Jameer Nelson and Monta Ellis – scored in double figures led by both Ellis and Chandler with 14 apiece. Once again showing their bench depth Richard Jefferson and Al-Farouq Aminu scored 13 and 12 points respectively to put at 7 the number of Mavs in double figures.
The Mavs stayed red hot throughout the game and dodged a bullet when the Grizzlies closed the point spread and pulled within 7 after halftime. Remaining calm, focused and determined, and displaying some brilliant ball handling, the Mavs picked up the pace and were leading by 19 points at the start of the fourth quarter.
Former Maverick veteran and fan favorite Vince Carter made his first appearance back to the place he called home for 3 years. He signed with the Grizzlies this off-season. In just under 10 minutes he had 3 points and a couple of rebounds.
There is still much work to be done on this new-look Mavs before the start of the regular season next Tuesday; but if the preseason is any indication, the best is yet to come.
The Mavs will play the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday in Shreveport and then close out the preseason at the Orlando Magic the next night to wrap up the preseason.
