JaVale McGee signed a partially guaranteed two-year deal for the Mavs, after DeAndre snubbed the Mavs. Dallas also traded for Zaza Pachulia and signed former maverick Samuel Dalembert to a veteran minimum deal.
Pachulia and Dalembert are good backup centers in this league, but they are definitely not good enough to be starting centers. Dalembert who is 34 years old and Pachulia who is 31 years old, are not athletic, which is a major problem when you place one of them next to 37 year old Dirk Nowitzki. Rebounding and interior defense would hurt the mavs all season if Dirk and Pachulia or Dalembert were paired together as the starting centers.
JaVale McGee stands out from Pachulia and Dalembert because of his athleticism, shot blocking ability, age, rebounding and skill above the rim. When healthy JaVale McGee can be a force in the paint, blocking shots and being fast and long enough to close out on shots. Age is also on JaVale’s side, being 27 means he still has a lot left in him. On offense JaVale doesn’t do much apart from dunking, which is he very good at doing. The good thing is that the Mavericks don’t need JaVale McGee to do much on offense, because they have Deron Williams, Wesley Matthews, Chandler Parsons and Dirk Nowitzki in the starting 5.
JaVale McGee would help the Mavs and Dirk Nowitzki on defense because we all know, Dirk is not the best defender. When guys get past Dirk, JaVale is fast and long enough to help on defense. Unfortunately the Mavs had the perfect fit at center, DeAndre Jordan, but Dallas has moved on and JaVale McGee was the closest thing to DeAndre they could get. The Mavs may look to play some small ball with guys coming off the bench. I believe the a starting lineup of Williams, Matthews, Parsons, Nowitzki and McGee would work for the mavs though.
Chandler Parsons recently said “a lot of guys have chips on their shoulders”, the mavs will be motivated and wanting to prove their critics wrong. JaVale McGee has only played 28 games in the last 2 seasons, so health will be key. Next free agency there will be some very good centers on the market such as Joakim Noah ( was a Florida Gator like Chandler Parsons ), Al Horford, Al Jefferson and Hassan Whiteside. Also Dwight Howard has a player option for the 2016-2017 season and could become a free agent, we all know Chandler Parsons recruited him to the Rockets!
