3 players who could be on the Mavs free agency short list

NBA free agency will begin on July 1 and it’s just around the corner. The Mavs will have 8 free agents, including 7 unrestricted and 1 restricted.

The 7 unrestricted free agents will be Deron Williams, Chandler Parsons, Dirk Nowitzki, Zaza Pachulia, Raymond Felton, David Lee & Charlie Villanueva. The one restricted free agent the Mavs will have is Dwight Powell. The Mavs also have a team option on JaVale McGee’s contract. Deron Williams, Dirk Nowitzki & Chandler Parsons will likely all opt out of their contracts leaving the Mavs with $62,899,289 cap space for next season.

With over 60 million in cap space for the Mavs, Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson will once again have lots of options and to consider. Let’s take look at some of the top free agents that the Mavs could sign this offseason.

Mike Conley – Age 28 – PG – Height 6’1 – Averages last season 15.3ppg, 6.1apg, 1.4spgĀ

Mike Conley will be the best point guard in free agency market. He played 56 games for the Grizzlies last season until an achilles injury ended his season. Conley is a great floor general, who is also a very good on-ball defender, he would be an upgrade over Deron Williams. Conley will be 28 yrs old next season, whereas Deron Williams will be 32yrs old next season. It could help the Mavs to get younger and plan for the future of the franchise.

Mike Conley will most likely command a max contract from teams interested in his services. Conley would be a great player for the Mavs for many years to come, but he will come at an expensive price compared to what Deron Williams will be worth on the market. The Memphis Grizzlies are an ageing team which could be entering a rebuild soon, Conley could bolt Memphis this offseason.

Hassan Whiteside – Age 27 – C – Height 7’0 – Averages last season 14.2ppg, 11.8rpg, 3.7bpg

Last season Hassan Whiteside solidified himself as an elite center in the NBA. He led the lead in blocks with an astonishing 269 blocks last season. He was also third in the league in both rebounding and field goal percentage. Hassan Whiteside will no doubt receive many max contract offers from teams.

Pat Riley and the Miami heat stated it is their ” number one priority” to resign Whiteside this offseason. With Chris Bosh’s playing future unknown and Dwayne Wade and Luol Deng also free agents, the Mavs could convince Whiteside to be the new face of the franchise after Dirk Nowitzki retires.

Dwight Howard – Age 30 – C – Height 6’11 – Averages last season 13.7ppg, 11.8rpg, 1.6bpg

Dwight Howard will be definitely leaving Houston this offseason, he opted out of his final year with the Rockets and will once again be looking for a new team. The Mavs will be one of the front runners to land Dwight.

The Rockets had a horrible season, the Harden and Howard duo that was once deadly didn’t work out last season. The Rockets didn’t give Dwight enough of the ball on offence, he was shooting a career high in field goal percentage but was taking an almost career low in shot per game. Dwight Howard could really fix some of the Mavs defensive and rebounding problems, he would be a great fit.

Mike Conley, Hassan Whiteside and Dwight Howard are some of the big fish in this free agency market. However the Mavs will also look at some other players who could help their bench unit for next season. Arron Afflalo and Eric Gordon will both be unrestricted free agents. The Mavs could really use a true shooting guard to play behind Wesley Matthews. Afflalo or Gordon could be a nice pickup for the Mavs.

The Dallas Mavericks offseason will start with the draft on Thursday, unfortunately the Mavs will only have the 46th pick. The Mavs traded their first round pick for this year to the Celtics in the Rondo trade 2 seasons ago. With the NBA finals over, its draft and free agency time!
