One of the most intriguing prospects in this years draft is without question, Luka Doncic. Doncic is the most polished European prospect many scouts claim they have ever seen. He absolutely has the potential to become a franchise player in this league, but with all players (especially players who didn’t play in college) there is a good amount of risk.
Doncic is a 18 year old, 6′ 6″ all-around guard from Slovenia. He currently plays professionally for Real Madrid in Spain. The thing I found most interesting about Doncic’s game is the numbers he is putting up in Europe. The majority of highly projected foreign prospects or players who go overseas to play instead of college put up pretty low numbers including: Kristaps Porzingis (11 PPG and 4 RPG), Frank Ntilikina (5 PPG, 1 RPG, and 1 APG), and Ricky Rubio (6 PPG and 4 APG). Meanwhile Doncic has been dominating has been dominating the second best league in the world (EuroLeague). He has put up a sensational stat line of 23.4 PPG, 5 RPG, and 5 APG. He is second in scoring in the EuroLeague and #1 in offensive efficiency. These incredible numbers in the EuroLeague show his insane offensive potential in the NBA.
The major negatives that most scouts find with Doncic are his athleticism and his defensive quickness. However, if he were paired with a strong, quick back court mate in Dennis Smith Jr, this would hardly be a problem. A backcourt of DSJ and Doncic could be just the franchise cornerstones that the Mavs need to build around for the future.
