The Dallas Mavericks (5-3) take a leap forward and defeat San Antonio Spurs 109-108. Dallas finished their second home-road back-to-back this season on a high note.
Jalen Brunson led the way with 31 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. Luka Dončić scored 23 points to go along with 12 rebounds and 7 assists. Tim Hardaway Jr had 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
Kristaps Porziņģis missed the game due to a lower back injury. That makes his fifth straight game missed in a Mavericks uniform. Jason Kidd stated before the game, “hopefully” he plays Saturday when the Mavericks host Boston Celtics. Maxi Kleber also missed tonight’s game. He is out with an oblique strain and will miss at least an additional week.
Boban Marjanović was huge in San Antonio for the Mavericks and it couldn’t have came at a better time as the team were without two major pieces in the post. Boban went 8-10 from the field and scored 17 total points with 5 rebounds.
Mavericks started the game out 23-16 but allowed the Spurs to climb back into the game with a 12-5 run in the last 3:36, to tie the game 28-28 at the end of the 1st quarter. Spurs capitalized in two focus areas in the first 12 minutes of the game, bench points (10) and points in the paint (18). Luka Dončić started hot with 10 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. Jalen Brunson was named starter for the second game in a row, adding another playmaker in the lineup pushes the pace and gives Dallas an additional player in the lineup to run the offense.
Reggie Bullock left the game at the end of the 1st quarter due to a facial injury and missed the remainder of the game.
Dallas started the 2nd quarter on a 10-2 run behind Tim Hardaway (5 points) and Boban Marjanović (5 points). Dallas had their biggest lead (12 points) and Spurs cut that down to 2 as the score was 50-48 with 2:47 to go in the first half. Dorian Finney-Smith hasn’t started the season great shooting the ball and I think it should be highlighted, he has shot 33.8% from the field and 22.2% from three heading into this contest. Dorian shot 0-3 from the field in the first half, all being three-point attempts. Mavs went into halftime with a 50-49 lead. There were 5 lead changes and 2 times tied in the first half.
San Antonio took a 12-4 run during the 3d quarter to take tthe lead 78-71 and really dominated the paint with 8 blocks and on the other end with 46 points in the paint at that point in the game. Luka Dončić received his second technical foul of the season. Mavericks finish strong on a 7-0 run to trail the Spurs 80-83 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
With Jakob Poeltl (health & safety protocol) out tonight, it was all about Boban. He had 17 points in 15 minutes helping the Mavs take the lead 90-89 with 7:45 to go in the game. Shortly after, Boban received his 5th foul and had to check out in crucial moments of the game. Dwight Powell received a technical foul for invertedly hit Doug McDermott in the face. I was really impressed with the Mavericks rebounding (56) tonight, it was a collective effort from the team as they average 45.3 per game. Jalen Brunson was clutch for this team with a personal 7-0 run as he has scored 25+ in both starts this season. The Mavericks isolated him against Doug McDermott and Derrick White down the stretch and he helped maintain the lead as the Mavericks were up on the Spurs 101-96 with 2:00 to play. Keldon Johnson and Dejounte Murray scored back-to-back layups as the Spurs trailed Mavs 102-103 with 51.7 seconds to go in the game. Jalen Brunson wasn’t fazed as he made a clutch jump shot with 21.3 seconods to go giving Dallas a 105-102 lead with 21.3 seconds to go. Mavericks held onto the lead but it was very chaotic to end the game.
Mavs were up 109-108 w/ 2.7 seconds, Brunson was fouled and missed the first free throw. Kidd tells Brunson to miss the second free throw on purpose with Spurs not having a time out. Brunson missed but it didn’t touch the rim. Refs reviewed it giving Spurs a chance to draw play on the side out, but when they throw it in, they weren’t able to get a shot off.
That was too close for comfort, but a win is a win.
The Mavericks held on to defeat Spurs 109-108.
San Antonio drops six of their past seven games, and they are 1-3 at home.
Spurs had three players score over 19 points tonight. Dejounte Murray scored 23 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assist. Devin Vassell had a big game for the Spurs with 21 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks. Derrick White scored 19 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds.
