Hope Reborn: Dallas Mavericks Land No. 1 Pick to Lead Dallas Into a New Era

The Dallas Mavericks moved up to the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. This marks the second time that Dallas has held the first-overall selection, when the franchise selected Mark Aguirre out of DePaul in 1981, and the first time in franchise history Dallas has moved up when in lottery position.

Entering the lottery, Mavs had a 1.8% chance of landing the No. 1 pick in the 2025 Draft and 8.5% chance at moving into one of the top four positions.

Cooper Flagg is the clear standout in the 2025 NBA Draft. He’s a versatile forward who can defend, rebound, score, and make plays, which makes him a perfect addition to a veteran-led team like the Mavericks. Playing alongside stars like Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis, Flagg doesn’t need to dominate the ball to make a big impact. He’s the kind of guy who can do the dirty work, hit open shots, and step up as a secondary playmaker when Kyrie’s off the floor or facing double teams.

The Mavs are in the middle of a reset after trading Luka Dončić to the Lakers, a move that shook the fanbase. But with vets like Davis and Irving still on board, adding Flagg could kick off a fresh new chapter. His mix of tough defense and all-around offensive game fits perfectly with what this team needs. A pivotal time for the trio to bring energy back to Dallas and uplift the fanbase.

Flagg brings youthful energy and long-term upside alongside Dereck Lively II. Flagg can grow into the franchise cornerstone while still contributing immediately, which helps balance the win-now needs of Nico Harrison with future planning.

The 2025 NBA Draft will take place June 25-26 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Coverage on both nights will begin at 7:00pm CT on ESPN platforms.
