The Dallas Mavericks have acquired former No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher from the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team trade involving the Oklahoma City Thunder. Dallas received Risacher and a top-55 protected 2027 second-round pick from Atlanta, while sending guard Ryan Nembhard to the Hawks and a 2027 second-round pick (via Chicago) to the Thunder.
While Risacher hasn’t reached the potential of a No. 1 overall pick, a fresh start with the Mavericks could be what the 21-year-old forward needs to reach another level. With catch-and-shoot ability, defensive versatility and positional size, Risacher already fits the mold of a 3&D wing. He owns career averages of 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 45.7% from the field and 36.0% from beyond the arc in 142 career games.
One area where he could help Dallas is his off-ball shooting. During the 2025-26 season, Risacher shot an impressive 38.7% on catch-and-shoot three-pointers, making him an ideal complement alongside playmakers in Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving. Dallas ranked near the bottom of the league in three-point efficiency and volume last season, making the addition of another reliable floor spacer this offseason.
As a rookie, he earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors after averaging 12.6 points and 3.6 rebounds while starting 73 games. He also scored 30 or more points four times, the most by any rookie that season.
His breakout performance came on April 10, 2025, when he exploded for a career-high 38 points on 15-of-20 shooting against Brooklyn. Even more impressive, he recorded multiple 30-point games without committing a turnover, becoming the first teenager in NBA history to accomplish that feat in a single season.
Despite those accomplishments, Atlanta’s evolving roster and offensive hierarchy made it difficult for Risacher to consistently expand his role under Quin Snyder. In Dallas, expectations will be different. Rather than carrying the pressure that comes with being the No. 1 overall pick, he’ll have the opportunity to grow alongside a core that’s being created under Masai Ujiri and Mike Schmitz, while contributing as an athletic wing who can defend multiple positions, knock down open shots and continue developing offensively. If it doesn’t work out, Risacher has a team option on the 2027-28 season. Basically a prove-it type season as the Mavs can opt-out of his deal with no penalty after the season.
Risacher has represented France on the international stage, averaging 9.7 points and 4.2 rebounds during the 2025 EuroBasket tournament after helping France earn medals at both the FIBA U-19 and U-17 World Cups.
At just 21 years old, Risacher’s upside remains high in the right system. He was one of the youngest players in Hawks history to reach 1,000 career points, a reminder that his development is still in the early stages.
For Dallas, this trade isn’t simply about acquiring a talented young player. It’s about betting on potential. The Mavericks are adding a versatile wing with size, proven shooting ability and room to grow in a system that should better maximize his strengths under Dusty May.
