Kyrie Irving’s aggressive mentality on the court raises Dallas Mavericks ceiling

When Irving displays an aggression-like mindset for the Mavericks, his impact increases the ceiling of the team. With his dribble drives and finishing ability at the rim, exploiting mental lapses from opposing defenders with his IQ, and taking more perimeter shots makes it much more difficult to defeat the Mavericks. When Irving is aggressive and looks for his offense alongside Luka Dončić, it forces opposing teams to realign their defensive strategies and pick their poison.

The Dallas Mavericks are 6-2 when Kyrie Irving scores 25 points or more this season, 5-6 when he doesn’t meet that threshold.

Irving has averaged 22.8 points, 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 19 games this season.

“I can’t be passive at all, that’s not my personality. I really want to come out aggressive and set the tone defensively and offensively.” Kyrie Irving stated in a post-game interview

Irving recorded 29 points (10-19 FG, 4-8 3FG, 5-6 FT), nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in his recent game against Portland Trail Blazers. His 22 points in the first half was just his fifth time this season recording 20-or-more points in a half, and it ties for his most points scored in a first half this season (22, 11/13/23 at New Orleans Pelicans).

“I think it started at the tip of the game in setting the tone, setting our mentality in how we wanted to play for the rest of the game. I feel like when we played against the Jazz, including myself, I didn’t get off to a good start, so I just wanted to take it upon myself to galvanize the group and stay aggressive in those first few possessions and really get a good feel of where my body is and where my mind is and just live with the results.” Kyrie Irving stated post game.

The 31-year-old guard missed 24 days with a heel contusion injury and he has been back for two games. He had challenges during his recovery as he couldn’t even get two socks on to put on his shoes for about two and-a-half weeks and he felt pain in his foot walking around or carrying his kids.

Irving had issues finding his balance while he was out, which took him so long to come back to playing. He also had a setback where he hit his heel when he was doing the lift bar in the weight room and that achy-ness came back. But his performance against the Trail Blazers was one of those nights where he wasn’t thinking about it. Irving mentioned his foot was feeling great. Which is great to hear as he avoided a major injury.

“Kai didn’t wait tonight. He was aggressive.” Jason Kidd stated post game.

Irving got back to being aggressive and that mentality wasn’t limited to the offensive side of the court. He had two steals and his energy on defense led to offense for himself and teammates. It’s no secret the defense for Mavs is a point of weakness on the team. The Mavericks currently rank 22nd in the league defensively and Irving’s commitment on defense by disrupting the opponent’s plays and forcing turnovers helps the performance of the team just as much as his offense.

Irving’s assertiveness on both sides of the court impacts the team’s success. He is not a passive player and the Mavs didn’t trade for him to be a passive player. He is known for being one of the best offensive talents this game has ever seen and a closer arising to the occasion when the lights are the brightest. When Irving is decisive in setting the tone, it raises the bar and gives the Mavericks two elite playmakers that can make defenses pay by scoring effectively and creating opportunities for teammates.

“Mentally, I felt great from the start, and you saw the results, so I want to continue to build on my consistency, find my rhythm, continue to be aggressive, and do the right things for our team to win.”

The Mavericks started their seven-game homestretch in the win column and the team will need to take care of business during this stand as they are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference. Irving’s ability to impact games is imperative for the Mavs to move up the standings through his scoring, passing, commitment to defense and aggressive mentality now that he is healthy and back with the team.
