Luka Dončić named First Team All-NBA

Luka Dončić has been named First Team All-NBA for the 2023-24 season. It is Dončić’s fifth First-Team All-NBA selection in his six-year career with the Dallas Mavericks. Dončić averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game in 2022-23. He is the only player in NBA history to average at least 33.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game in a season.

Dončić joins Kevin Durant and Tim Duncan as the only players to garner five All-NBA First Team selections before their 26th birthday while also joining Larry Bird, George Gervin and Duncan as the only players to earn five-or-more All-NBA First Team selections within their first six seasons since the ABA/NBA merger (1976-77).

Dončić finished first in the NBA for scoring (33.9), becoming the first Maverick player to ever lead the league in scoring. He broke his own single-season franchise record (32.4 ppg in 2022-23) for the highest-scoring average in Mavericks history. Dončić and Mark Aguirre are the only Mavericks to finish in the top three in the league in scoring. He led the league in 35-point games (32), 40-point efforts (13), 30-point triple-doubles (16), 35-point triple-doubles (11), 40-point triple-doubles (2) and 20-5-5 games (60).

Dončić ranked first in scoring, third in assists and 15th in rebounds. He finished in the top 25 in all three categories for the fifth year in a row. Dončić also became one of four players in league history to finish in the top 15 in points, rebounds, assists and steals (Nikola Jokić, Russell Westbrook and Bird).

Dončić was named NBA Western Conference Player of the Month for February and March. It marked the fifth time in his career that he has received the honor (November 2019, February 2022, December 2022, February 2024). Dončić became the first player in franchise history to receive the award in consecutive months, also joined Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki (December 2004, February 2005) as the only Mavericks to receive the honor twice in the same season.

Dončić is one Player of the Month honor shy of matching Nowitzki (6) for the most such awards in franchise history.

Dončić scored a career-high and franchise-most 73 points in a 148-143 win over the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on January 26, 2024. In a record-setting night, Dončić tied for the fourth-most points scored in a game in NBA history, with only three other players recording 73-or-more points (Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant and David Thompson). His 73 points was the most points recorded in a game this season and the most recorded in a game since Kobe Bryant’s 81 in 2006.

Dončić’s 73 points was one of 15 games with a player scoring 70-or-more points in NBA history and one of 11 games with the player doing so with a 70-point double-double. Only Dončić and Wilt Chamberlain have had at least one 73-plus point double-double in NBA history. Dončić recorded the most efficient 70-point game in NBA history with a .758 field goal percentage. Only Wilt Chamberlain’s 66 points on 29-for-35 shooting (.829) and Karl Malone’s 61 points on 21-for-26 shooting (.808) are the 60-plus- point efforts on higher efficiency than Dončić’s 73 points on 25-for-33 shooting (.758).

At halftime, Dončić had 41 points (16-21 FG) against the Hawks, setting a new franchise record for points in a single half (previous: 34, Dirk Nowitzki, 2nd half, vs UTA 11/3/09). His 41-point half is the 15th 40-point half in the past 20-plus years in NBA history. His 16 field goals made is the third-most in a half in NBA history (18, Kobe Bryant vs. TOR, 1/22/0; 17, Brandon Jennings vs. GS, 11/14/09), doing so with the third-highest efficiency (min. 15 FGM) behind Kenneth Lofton Jr.’s 15-for-18 (.833) shooting at OKC (4/9/23) and Brandon Jennings’ 17-for-21 (.810) shooting vs. GS (11/14/09).

Triple-Doubles

Dončić set the NBA record for most consecutive 30-point triple-doubles with six, he set the record for most consecutive 35-point triple-doubles with five. Dončić produced the first 25-point triple-double in a half in NBA history when he recorded 29 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the opening half vs. Utah on Dec. 6.

The Mavs guard recorded his 75th career triple-double, becoming the ninth player in NBA history to reach the milestone and moving one triple-double shy of tying James Harden (76) for the eighth-most triple-doubles in NBA history.

Dončić led the league in 35-point triple-doubles (11) and 40-point triple-doubles (2). He ecorded Mavs franchise-record 21 triple-doubles in 2023-24 after recording his 77th career triple-double with a 39-point, 12-rebound, 10-assist showing at CHA (4/9/24), beating his previously set record of 17 in 2019-20.

While Dončić prepares for his second Western Conference Finals appearance in the past three seasons, he joins an elite tier in NBA history. Only 28 players in NBA history have at least five All-NBA First Team selections. Dončić received five in his first six seasons.
